GUN BARREL CITY, TEXAS Gun Barrel City lies on the eastern shore of Cedar Creek Reservoir fifty-five miles southeast of Dallas. The community developed after construction of the reservoir in 1969 and grew rapidly. Sixty residents were reported there in 1970 and 3,526 by the early 1990s. In 2000 the population was 5,145.
The town name is derived from its motto, "We Shoot Straight With You," and its symbol, a rifle.
Long before the lake was built, Gun Barrel Lane (now State Highway 198) traversed the area. This mud road was a shortcut across Cedar Creek from Mabank to Trinidad and Seven Points.
In 1987 community residents began local beautification projects and also collected aluminum cans as a fundraising project to help restore the Battleship Texas (see Battleship Texas State Historical Site).
The City has received several State Honored Awards including The Go Texan Award for becoming a Certified Retirement Community in 2009. Gun Barrel City holds two festivals each year, the July 4th Festival/Concert in the Park and the Christmas Festival/Parade. You can visit the festival website at www.gunbarrelcityfestivals.net for more information regarding these events. In comparison to other cities, Gun Barrel City is young but they are the Heart of Cedar Creek Lake and would like to extend some of their East Texas hospitality to you.
With a name like Gun Barrel City, you might think that the community has been around since the early days of Texas independence. Not true! Forty plus years ago, a close-knit group of friends (affectionately known as the 'Dirty Dozen') began the process of making their unincorporated community a 'real' town. Soon after their vision, and 200 signatures
later, an election was held to decide the fate of the group's dream. As the votes were tallied, their dream became reality by a mere four votes and Gun Barrel City was born. The City was incorporated on May 12, 1969, soon after the construction of Cedar Creek Lake. In 1996, with the population being over 5,000, the citizens voted to become a Home Rule City.
The name originated from Gun Barrel Lane, which connected Mabank and Payne Springs. According to local historians, the name was first used by J.C. Waits and is a reference to the relatively straight nature of the road. Gun Barrel Lane, eventually became State Highway 198.
According to the Handbook of Texas Online, the community has won second place (twice) in the Governor's Today, Gun Barrel City is a thriving community that offers a quality of life that is difficult to find in the big city. Many residents choose to make their home in GBC due to the friendly nature of the local residents and the proximity of the community to Cedar Creek Lake.
